Martin J. O'Malley is an American politician and the former Governor of Maryland, serving from January 2007 to January 2015. He was a candidate for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States in 2016. Before becoming governor, he served as the Mayor of Baltimore from 1999 to 2007.
O'Malley's political career began in 1999 when he was elected as the Mayor of Baltimore, a position he held for eight years. In 2006, he was elected as the 61st Governor of Maryland, and was re-elected in 2010. As governor, he focused on education reform, economic development, and environmental protection.
One of the most notable controversies during O'Malley's tenure as governor was the Baltimore City Jail scandal, which involved allegations of corruption and mismanagement. Despite this, he was re-elected with a significant margin.
